King James Version

(For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)
New King James Version

For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had often seized him, and he was kept under guard, bound with chains and shackles; and he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the wilderness.
New American Standard Bible

For He had been (was) commanding the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had seized him many times; and he was bound with chains and shackles and kept under guard, and yet he would burst his fetters and be driven by the demon into the desert.
New International Version

For Jesus had commanded the evil (Greek, unclean) spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.
The Amplified Bible

For Jesus was already commanding the unclean spirit to come out of the man. for many times it had snatched and held him; he was kept under guard and bound with chains and fetters, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the wilderness (desert).
Wuest’s Expanded Translation

for He was commanding the unclean spirit to go out of the man. For often he had seized him by force and carried him away. And he was put in chains, with his hands and feet shackled, being constantly guarded. And breaking the bands apart, he was being driven by the demon into the deserted regions.
Phillips’ Modern English

For Jesus was commanding the evil spirit to come out of the man. Again and again the evil spirit had taken control of him, and though he was bound with chains and fetters and closely watched, he would snap his bonds and go off into the desert with the devil at his heels.
