So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
New King James Version

So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy.

So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy.
New International Version

It does not, therefore, depend on man’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.
The Amplified Bible

So then [God’s gift] is not a question of human will and human effort, but of God’s mercy. [It depends not on one’s own willingness nor on his strenuous exertion as in running a race, but on God’s having mercy on him.]
Wuest’s Expanded Translation

Therefore, then, it [this being the recipient of God’s mercy] is not of the one who desires nor even runs, but of the One who is merciful, God.
Phillips’ Modern English

It is obviously not a question of human will or human effort, but of divine mercy.
Williams’ Language of the People

So one’s destiny does not depend on his own willing or strenuous actions but on God’s having mercy on him.
