I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the ekklesia may receive edifying.

I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless he interprets, that the ekklesia may receive edification.

Wuest’s Expanded Translation

Now I desire that all of you be speaking in tongues, but I prefer that you impart divine revelations to others which you have received. Moreover, greater is the one who imparts divine revelations to others which you have received. Moreover, greater is the one who imparts he interpret, in order that the local assembly might receive upbuilding.
Phillips’ Modern English

I should indeed like you all to speak with “tongues,” but I would much rather that you all preached the word of God. For the preacher of the word does a greater work than the speaker with “tongues,” unless of course the latter interprets his words his for the benefit of the Ekklesia.
Williams’ Language of the People

I would like for all of you to speak in ecstasy, but I would rather that you prophesy. The man who speaks with real prophetic insight renders greater service than the man who speaks in ecstasy, unless the latter explains it, so the congregation may receive an uplift.
