King James Version

The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds:
New King James Version

The former preach Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing to add afflictions to my chains;
New American Standard Bible

(v. 17) the former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition rather than from pure motives (not sincerely), thinking to cause me distress in my imprisonment (bonds).
New International Version

(v. 17) The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains.
The Amplified Bible

(v. 17) But the former preach Christ out of a party spirit, insincerely [out of no pure motive, but thinking to annoy me], supposing they are making my bondage more bitter and my chains more galling.
Wuest’s Expanded Translation

(v. 17) but others out of a partisan, self-seeking spirit are proclaiming Christ, not with pure, unadulterated motives, but insincerely, thinking to raise up additional afflictions to my already existing chains.
Phillips’ Modern English

(v. 17) The motive of the former is questionable – they preach in a partisan spirit, hoping to make my chains even more galling than they are.
Williams’ Language of the People

(v. 17) the former are preaching Christ from the motive of rivalry, not in sincerity, supposing that this is making it harder for me to bear my imprisonment.
